Jose Mourinho and Brendan Rodgers will lock horns for the return fixture of the Conference League semi-final betweem Roma and Leicester. The two coaches parted ways with utmost respect after last weekend’s draw at King Power Stadium.
Roma is officially out of the Champions League
With AS Roma’s goalless draw against Bologna and Juventus’ battling win versus Venezia, Mourinho is now confirmed to be out of the next season’s Champions League based on the Serie A table.
He could still have his team Roma in Europe’s premier competition if he adds another European glory to his name. Not only can he be the first-ever champion of the Europa Conference League, but he’ll have a magnificent record of winning all three current continental trophies.
But he needs to tackle Leicester before thinking of the final. Mourinho addressed the media after the first-leg with “not a Conference League level game” tagline as it was a game of high-quality football.
When and where to watch?
The match kicks off at 20:00 on Thursday 5th May 2022, and the entire match will be available on BT Sport.
Leicester is out of the top half of the table
Leicester’s domestic form continues to flatter as they lost for the 13th time in the Premier League on Sunday. Tottenham Hotspur, the club they beat to their historic Premier League title back in 2016, comfortably dispatched Rodgers’ team with Heung-Min Son netting a brace.
Leicester only managed three wins out of 17 away league games this season. More than half of those games ended in a defeat for Leicester as they sailed through inconsistency after winning the FA Cup last season.
In Europe, Leicester was denied a Europa League knockout place by Napoli in a dramatic final day encounter. Their wins against Stade Rennais and PSV Eindhoven also had fortunate incidents, but Leicester is sailing over to represent England in another European final.
Draw at the halftime of the tie
Lorenzo Pellegrini’s fourth Conference League goal had Roma at the top in the first half of the game at King Power Stadium last week. Roma paid the price for not putting the tie to bed with an own-goal by Gianluca Mancini leveled the score 25 minutes before time.
AS Roma & Leicester City Team News
Henrikh Mkhitaryan missed the home game against Bologna on the weekend after he was substituted off at Leicester due to an injury.
Versatile Belgian international Timothy Castagne was injured in the first-leg, but he played the whole 90 minutes against Tottenham on Sunday. Wilfred Ndidi is unavailable due to a serious knee injury.
Will Mou and Rodgers’ “classy” relationship continue?
It could all go wrong in the heat of the moment on Thursday. Mourinho praised classy Rodgers after last week as he disclosed his counterpart bought him an expensive wine in a great gesture of sportsmanship. But it’ll all be forgotten once the two men enter the scene for a place in the first-ever Conference League final.
