Two teams currently high in confidence for different reasons will lock horns on Saturday in Bundesliga. TSG Hoffenheim ended 2021 with superb form as they maintained an unbeaten run with a late equalizer by versatile Kevin Akpoguma against Borussia Monchengladbach. Augsburg failed to beat cellar-dwellers Greuther Furth, but they send shockwaves by completing a six-digit sum transfer for the first time in the club’s history.
Hoffenheim hope to continue where they pause
Few teams ended 2021 in top form in Bundesliga. In their bid to return to European football, Hoffenheim recorded four wins and a couple of draws since mid-November with some exhilarating football.
One of their strengths has been scoring late goals. In each of their last three fixtures, Hoffenheim netted in the last five minutes to add four more points to their bag and stay in contention for Europe.
Sebastian Hoeness is one of the few coaches who stayed put this season in a flurry of managerial merry-go-rounds. That seemed to help Hoffenheim’s case with seemingly no transition as he builds from his maiden season in the job of this magnitude.
When and where to watch?
The match kicks off at 14:30 on Saturday 8th January 2021
Ricardo Pepi’s transfer put Augsburg in USMNT’s map
MLS has shown plenty of promise in the recent seasons. While the big news concerning the league would be Lorenzo Insigne’s transfer to Toronto, the outgoing transfer to European big clubs still get attractions.
And none other than Ricardo Pepi’s transfer to relegation-threatened Augsburg in the early days of this transfer window. The US international was voted the best young player of the just concluded MLS season.
With the backing of a US investor, Augsburg shrugged off challenges to bring the 18-years-old sharp-shooter for a record sum. For a side that strived for goals, the pressure will be big on the energetic strikers.
Hoffe stole the show in WWK Arena
Augsburg also started the season with plenty of promise after having a solid summer transfer market that included them signing Euro U21 champions Arne Maier and Niklas Dorsch. But, in the opening round of the Bundesliga, Hoffenheim crushed them by 4-0 thanks to a stunning performance by Jacob Bruun Larsen.
TSG Hoffenheim & FC Augsburg Team News
Bruun Larsen returned to training after missing the majority of the Hinrunde due to muscular injury. Robert Skov, Ermin Bicakcic (who also returned a positive COVID-19 test) and Marco John are all unavailable.
Reece Oxford is suspended but he’s also one of the four players who are currently in quarantine that include Dorsch. Carlos Gruezo, Alfred Finnbogason and Tobias Strobl are all out injured.
Pepi’s debut would be massive in the US market
As fate has it, Pepi will face his compatriot Chris Richards in his first Bundesliga game. Hoffenheim is the team in-form especially in front of goal with a dynamic front three. Augsburg is the direct opposite as their attack is their weakest point, but the young Pepi hopes to make that history.
