Manchester United will host AS Roma in the first leg of the Europa League semifinal on Thursday. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side dropped two points against Leeds United on the weekend. The gap with champions-elect Manchester City is ten points with only five games left in the season. Roma are well outside the European places in the league as they drop to seventh place.

Manchester United aim a second Europa League triumph in five years

Jose Mourinho guided United to European success in 2016-17 with a final win against Ajax. United also won the EFL Cup at that time, but they could not put their hands on any trophy since then.

Solskjaer is now building a youthful side as they managed to open a big gap from the sides behind them. But city rivals Manchester City are currently in their league of their own, making it difficult for Solskjaer’s troops.

There was also the talk of the Super League and all the protests that took place during the week. Some fans also targeted the Norwegian as they think he protects the owner Joel Glazer.

When and where to watch?

The match kicks off at 20:00 on Thursday 29th April 2021, and the entire game will be available on BT Sport 2.

Roma can only qualify to UCL if only they win this season’s UEL

A title would go a long way in shaping Paulo Fonseca’s tenure at Roma. Still, they get more motivation because this is their only path to Europe’s elite competition. They could also miss out on Europa League, with the newly-created Conference League the only hope at this time.

Roma only managed a single point from their last three games. Despite a spirited performance against an in-form Atalanta side, they lost to relegation-threatened Torino and Cagliari.

They dominated Cagliari at the weekend, but their defence was all over the place. The five goals of the game scored before the final twenty minutes as the results left Roma in seventh place, trailing fierce rivals Lazio by six points.

United won five of the last six against Roma

Roma first tasted victory against United when the sides met in the 2006-07 Champions League quarterfinal. But in a highly memorable return leg, United won 7-1 in a game Solskjaer came off the bench for the final half an hour. United also won four games against Roma since that famous night at Old Trafford.

Man United & Roma Team News

Phil Jones and Anthony Martial are the only players who are unavailable for the game for the hosts.

Ricardo Calafiori struggled with successive injuries in his career, and he’s now out for three weeks with a muscle injury. Pedro and Nicolo Zaniolo are not expected to appear in the final third. Gianluca Mancini is suspended for the first leg at Manchester.

United to have the final say in Fonseca’s time at Roma?

The chances are slim for Fonseca to stay at the helm beyond this season, even if he wins the Europa League. A defeat here would make it easier for the new owners at the club. On the other hand, Solskjaer is now settled at United after enduring a difficult time.
