VfL Wolfsburg will end their very successful campaign with a home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05. The hosts already secured Champions League qualification after their draw at RB Leipzig. Mainz also managed to reach their target after results elsewhere meant they didn’t need to bother against Borussia Dortmund last Sunday.

Wolfsburg will play Champions League for the third time

For only the third time in their history, VfL Wolfsburg will play Champions League football next season. Oliver Glasner had a decent first season at the club, but this is a memorable campaign. He also looks to depart in the summer.

Wolfsburg had some of the best transfers of the season. Still, Glasner didn’t have the best of relationships with the sporting director Jorg Schmadtke. In the end, it would mean Glasner leaving the club after only two years at the helm.

Wolfsburg needed a point last Sunday at Leipzig to clinch a Champions League berth. But, in the first half, they played some of the best football we’ve seen in Bundesliga this season as Maximilian Phillip’s brace separated the sides at the break. Leipzig roared back in the second half, but Glasner and his troops can celebrate their achievement.

When and where to watch?

The match kicks off at 14:30 on Saturday 22nd May 2021

Mainz and Svensson target bigger things next term

It’s the first time in Bundesliga that a team with only seven or fewer points at midseason survived the drop. The appointment of Bo Svensson played a significant role in this achievement as Mainz are one of the best teams in the second half of the season.

They now aim to do better next season with more transfer activities and extending loan deals. Mainz have been in the relegation fight for a while, but they could be the potential surprise packages next term.

Just like Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel secured consecutive Champions League final appearances. Both of them are products of Mainz. Svensson could be the next on the line, although it’s a pressure being compared to some of Europe’s top coaches.

Wolves unbeaten in ten against Mainz

Wolfsburg won their last four games against Mainz after the fixture saw six straight draws. Mainz didn’t score a goal in their previous five games against Wolfsburg. Strikers Bartosz Bialek and Wout Weghorst scored the goals as Wolfsburg beat Mainz 2-0 at the OPEL Arena in the reverse fixture.

Bialek will not feature this week, however, as he suffered a cruciate ligament injury. Renato Steffen is also out for most of the second half of the campaign as he will also miss Euros

Mainz will be in full swing without any injuries and suspensions for their final game of a topsy-turvy season.

Two in-form sides end the season at Volkswagen Arena

It’s celebration time in both camps. Wolfsburg secured Champions League football while Mainz climbed from the ashes to continue fighting in Bundesliga. Wolfsburg can return to third-place if they better Borussia Dortmund’s result as all games played simultaneously.
