Struggling hosts Pakistan set to compete against West Indies in opening one-dayer at Sharjah
Pakistan is set to play against West Indies in the opening game of the one-day series at Sharjah on 30th September. The game will start at 11:00 GMT.
Visitors West Indies had been completely outplayed in the recently concluded T20 series against Pakistan. The hosts led by new captain Sarfaraz Ahmed put in some great performances to inflict a whitewash on the world champions. However, all is set to change as the two sides are now set to battle in the one-day series. The sides are currently lingering at the bottom of the table with Pakistan ranked at an all-time low, occupying ninth place.
Azhar Ali will be under a lot of pressure coming into the side after his side got whacked by England in the one-day series. The captain has received plenty of flak from all quarters but would be determined to start the series on a winning note. The likes of Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik and Sarfaraz Ahmed have been in good form which is great news for Pakistan. Sharjeel Khan is also a guy who needs to put in big performances as everyone has no doubts as to what he can do with the willow at the top. Asad Shafiq is also included in the lineup while Mohammad Hafeez and Sami Aslam have been dropped from the side due to poor form.
Sohail Khan and Rahat Ali’s inclusion will bolster the bowling resources as Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali and Wahab Riaz make up the bench strength for fast bowling for Pakistan. The spinners for the series are Mohammad Nawaz, Imad Wasim and Yasir Shah.
West Indies have been disappointing in the T20 series as they did not adjust to the slow conditions in the UAE. The likes of Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels and Johnson Charles did show good form in the tri-nation series played in the Caribbean featuring Australia and South Africa. The likes of Shannon Gabriel and Sunil Narine have bowled well and may provide a breakthrough for West Indies in the one-day format. Evin Lewis, Dinesh Ramdin and captain Jason Holder are also good players who have done well for the side in this format.
Key players for the game
Darren Bravo is the one player to watch as he scored a magnificent hundred against South Africa in the tri-nation series held in Caribbean. He is a good player of spin and his recent performances have come against quality attacks, proving that he is almost ready to go up another gear as a player.
For Pakistan, Sarfaraz Ahmed is the man in form for Pakistan in the one-day format as the side would be looking towards him to put in some big performances to see them win games on a more frequent basis.
The pitch at Sharjah is expected to be a good batting strip. The surface may also provide assistance to spinners if there is no dew prevalent in the skies. Weather is expected to be good for the game with no chance of rain.
