Second-placed Olympique de Marseille host relegation-threatened Clermont in the last game of the Ligue 1 weekend. Jorge Sampaoli’s side returned to winning ways thanks to an acrobatic effort from Arkaduisz Milik. Clermont lost to fellow struggling side Saint-Etienne for the second time.
Milik and Bakambu competition firing OM to success
After scoring a beauty that secured the win against FC Metz off the bench, Polish international Milik continues to vow his case for a starting place with a telling goal celebration.
Winter signing Cedric Bakambu also netted in the game for Marseille before Metz equalized in the match. It’s a massive win for Sampaoli in the weekend OGC Nice produced a poor performance against Olympique Lyonnais.
Nice were utterly dominant against Marseille in the Coupe de France, but OM now has a better chance of qualifying for the Champions League despite a majority of the season is yet to be played. They are five points ahead of Strasbourg, who is a surprise entry in fourth place.
When and where to watch?
The match kicks off at 19:45 on Sunday 20th February 2022, and the entire match will be available on BT Sport.
Saint-Etienne broke Clermont’s hearts for the second time
In their first meeting, Saint-Etienne scored two injury-time goals to secure an improbable 3-2 victory against Clermont in the game they had to chase for the most part against Pascal Gastien’s side. It was a major setback for the debutante who started the season with amazing results in the first month.
The story repeated last weekend with Saint-Etienne recording another late victory through goals from their two defenders Mahdi Camara and Timothee Kolodziejczak in the final twenty minutes.
This result means Clermont is now only four points ahead of the bottom-placed team Bordeaux. Saint-Etienne, who currently occupies the playoff spot, reduced the gap between them to three points.
Two meetings, two OM wins
There have been only two meetings between the teams to report before Sunday’s match. Marseille knocked Clermont out of the now-defunct Coupe de la Ligue back in 2016. The reverse fixture this season ended with Cengiz Under’s solitary goal for Marseille.
Marseille & Clermont Team News
Luan Peres could be unavailable with a minor injury. Meanwhile, US international Konrad de la Fuente returned after missing the last few months due to a muscle injury.
Clermont has a full squad for the trip to Marseille.
Marseille looks to wrap Champions League qualification
It’s not an easy season both on and off the pitch, but finishing second once again in the Ligue 1 standing will do a lot of good for Marseille financially. Sampaoli’s side is still facing lots of issues to be addressed, but their defensive record has been generally brilliant. As for Clermont, in their first-ever Ligue 1 campaign, there is only one worry, survival. They’re currently three points off the relegation zone.
